Fundraiser held for scholarship for Cedarburg swimmer killed by drunk driver

CEDARBURG -- They made a big splash for a special cause at the Cedarburg High School swimming pool recently. For the third year, a fundraiser was held for a scholarship in Alyssa Dorfler's name.

Alyssa Dorfler would have been a senior this year at Cedarburg High School.

"Fishy" as she was known, was killed in Oconto County while driving to the family cottage with her mother. They were broadsided by a drunk driver who sped through a stop sign doing 61 miles-per-hour.

Alyssa Dorfler was just 15 and had just completed her freshman year when she passed away.

Even as they continue to grieve, Alyssa's parents, Craig and Karen Dorfler talk about their unspeakable loss because they want to get a message out: don't drink and drive.

Alyssa Dorfler's little brother, Joey is just 11, but he remembers his sister who was once described by her uncle as an innocent angel.

Alyssa Dorfler's friends worked tirelessly to put together a swimming fundraiser in her name. They say they'll never forget the sweet girl who used to love to swim and laugh.

In honor of her memory, the Alyssa Dorfler Memorial Scholarship Fund was established and each year the Alyssa Dorfler Memorial Swim Meet is held to support the scholarship fund.

The Cedarburg High School Girls Swim Team would greatly appreciate donations to the Alyssa Dorfler Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Donations can be sent to Cedarburg High School (attn:  Sue Miller) at W68 N611 Evergreen Blvd., Cedarburg, Wisconsin 53012.
