Packers Running Back Cedric Benson out for the season

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Green Bay Packers running back Cedric Benson will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season after having surgery on his foot.

The Packers made the announcement Thursday, one day after coach Mike McCarthy says Benson had surgery.

Benson was placed on injured reserve but designated to return on Oct. 10 after spraining his left foot. He was eligible to resume practice, and could have played as early as Dec. 9 against Detroit. But he never did practice, and said last week he was considering surgery.

Benson finishes the year with 248 yards rushing on 71 carries.
