Students at Greenfield Biligual Elementary Fuel Up to Play 60

MILWAUKEE -- Students at Greenfield Bilingual Elementary are eating healthy and getting active!

A school wellness program has helped seventh-grader Carlos Cruz discover some new hobbies.

"Soccer -- I get to use my leg muscles and in badminton I use my hands and my vision," Cruz said.

Fuel Up to Play 60 was founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL.

Even Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson has joined the campaign to get kids moving.

"Fuel Up to Play 60 is a national program that gets students engaged to eat healthy and exercise 60 minutes a day," Mary Andrae with the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board said.

In the program, students are exposed to a variety of activities they can do both in and out of school.

"Kayaking, canoeing, rock wall climbing, snowshoeing, bicycling, if it`s in the Milwaukee area, and they want to try it we use the Fuel Up funds to make it happen," Greenfield Bilingual Elementary Physical Education Specialist Gail Milbrath said.

Before exercising, the kids must fuel up with nutritious food.

"My plate is a great teaching tool to showcase how we should be eating. Half of that plate should be fruits and vegetables, so a big focus of it is to get more fruits and vegetables in our diet," Andrae said.

Students are also taught how to make simple and healthy snacks.

"I have tried oatmeal before and I thought it was pretty gross at first but then I tried it involving apples or any other fruit and I think it was pretty good," eighth-grader Keishla Lopez said.

Now, many of these students are living healthier lifestyles while being a positive influence on their friends, peers and even their parents.

More than 2,000 schools and 90% of students in Wisconsin are participating in Fuel Up to Play 60.
