School districts review security in wake of Sandy Hook tragedy

MILWAUKEE -- Monday, December 17th was the first day back in class for all students since the Sandy Hook mass shooting. The first order of business in many school districts was to review safety and security plans in school.

Jennifer Rushing has three children in elementary school and is now concerned about safety in schools. She's thankful the Milwaukee Public School system is reviewing its safety plan. But she wonders if that's enough.

"I'd feels safer if there were bullet-proof glass at every door. And a safety liaison at every school," said Rushing.

Since last Friday's mass shooting, many school districts tell FOX6 News, they are taking a second look at their protocols.

"We have secure entrances at all of our buildings so we have cameras, we have a buzzer system, and doors are locked during school hours and locked at all times," said Stacy Tapp of the Racine Unified School District. "Parents will probably see us having a lock-down drill. It's always something they do. But we don't want to scare kids having to do it this week  in the coming weeks. We'll probably do one to ensure were up to speed and doing things properly."

Similar steps were taking in Greendale. The district said as an immediate response, Greendale police officers will have an increased presence in and around school buildings.

In Mequon, officials are reviewing additional measures that they may need to implement to maximize security.
