Salvation Army hosts 23rd annual Christmas Family Feast downtown

MILWAUKEE -- The Salvation Army hosted its 23rd annual Christmas Family Feast on Christmas Day at the Delta Center in downtown Milwaukee.

The event was free and open to anyone who wanted a good meal and fellowship on Christmas Day.

“Christmas is a wonderful time of year when we are all reminded of the many blessings we have.  However, for an increasing number of people in our community, the holidays can be challenging.  The economy has taken a toll on so many families and through the Christmas Family Feast we are able to share compassion and offer a real feeling of community," Major Roger Ross, Salvation Army Milwaukee County Commander said.

This year’s menu consisted of ham, turkey and dressing, mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, dinner rolls and an assortment of deserts and beverages.

Guests received complimentary gifts while supplies lasted.

One organizer said she grew up every year celebrating a Merry Christmas, and now wants to make sure everyone else does as well.

"Some of our guests have faced death or job loss. It's just a wonderful feeling that everyone is here and very happy and you just wanna make people feel good even if it's only for one day," Chandra Staples said.

Last year 10,000 individuals were served dinner on Christmas Day.
