Gov. Walker okays $1.7M for specialized public transportation

MADISON -- Gov. Scott Walker approved on Friday, January 4th 25 grants totaling $1,744,982 for projects to enhance local transportation options for Wisconsin residents with disabilities. The federally-funded New Freedom program is administered through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).

New Freedom program grants are awarded for capital and operating expenses. Several projects will continue supporting mobility managers to coordinate rides and vehicles, so existing vehicles and services can be utilized. Other projects will provide transportation services, such as volunteer driver and voucher programs for individuals with disabilities, or projects that assist in making bus stops wheelchair accessible.

In a news release, Gov. Walker issued the following statement: “These grants will help support new public transportation services and alternatives that go beyond what is required under the Americans with Disabilities Act. We are committed to providing easily-accessible and readily-available transportation means for individuals with disabilities.”
