Wauwatosa church hosts vigil in Officer Sebena’s honor

WAUWATOSA -- A vigil was held for slain Wauwatosa Officer Jennifer Sebena Friday night, January 4th at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa.

30-year-old Sebena was found dead near Underwood and Harmonee in downtown Wauwatosa early Monday , December 24th.Officer Sebena died after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

"There are people of faith people of love people who care many people in this community who really care about other people," said Margaret Schoewe, the pastor of St. Matthew.

Candles were passed around as people bundled together and remember Sebena, a victim of gun violence.

"Sometimes you feel like you're on an island and you're all alone and to know that so many people care I think that's good for anybody and certainly for our department," said Barry Weber, the Wauwatosa Police Chief. Weber expressed how difficult it is to move forward after a tragedy within the police department, but he was overwhelmed by how all of his officers have come together as a family.

"We'll all be there to support each other, we'll move on never the same as we were before and we'll always remember December 24th for other reasons too," said Weber.

Sebena was found shot multiple times outside the Wauwatosa Fire Department, just steps away from Friday's vigil. Prosecutors say Sebena was a victim of domestic abuse. As her husband Benjamin Sebena awaits trial for her murder, some at Friday's vigil felt this tragic case is a direct call to action.

"Understanding intolerance where you can help people seek the help they need to overcome whatever demons they are struggling with," said Ann Heidkamp, from Wauwatosa.

Meanwhile, the Wauwatosa Peace Officer’s Association has set up a memorial fund to help with funeral expenses.
