World's biggest Packers flag flying on Milwaukee's south side

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Packers fans show their pride in a number of ways. Some do it with their wardrobe, others like to wave green and gold flags. One South Side business is proudly displaying the world's biggest Packers flag.

Take a drive down 13th street near Howard Ave. and it's impossible to miss - a lot of green and a lot of 'G.' It's exactly what you'd expect from the world's largest Packers flag.

"The customers here at StorageMart love it and even people driving by, the first couple days we have it up, everyone's honking at the flag," said John Schlueter.

Schlueter's brother got the idea to bring the massive banner to StorageMart. Upon trying to order the flag, the brothers learned the Packers would have to approve of the flag so massive.

"They were actually very excited about it," Schlueter said.

In fact, Schlueter says the team directed the brothers to a vendor who specializes in huge flags. Measuring 60 feet long and 30 feet wide, the brother encountered another problem: raising and lowering the flag by hand.

"When it was a manual process, on a windy day like today, it would take three people to get the flag in the air," Schlueter said.

These days, the brothers use a power drill to drape the neighborhood in green and gold. Those seeing the flag for the first time pause before snapping a picture or two.

"Got the iPhone out, snapped a couple pictures, gonna show the grandkids when we get there, it's gonna be great," said Steve Lieber, who saw the flag on his way to Oak Creek.

Normally, Old Glory occupies the 125-foot-tall flagpole. But Schlueter said the community seems to enjoy the temporary swap.

"We're a little different here in Wisconsin," he said.
