Wrong-way driver crashes after leading police on pursuit

WAUKESHA CO. (WITI) -- FOX6's media partners at the Waukesha Patch have reported 19-year-old Donte Delamar has been charged with attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer (a felony count) after he led police on a pursuit in the City of Pewaukee Wednesday morning, January 16th.

The Patch reports Delamar was also cited for possession of marijuana.

According to police, deputies attempted to stop the 19-year-old for driving the wrong way on STH 164 at Tower Place in the City of Pewaukee around 1:39 a.m. However,  the driver fled the scene, traveling southbound on Pewaukee Road -- driving speeds of 60-80 mph.

Police say the driver drove through two red lights and proceeded south entering the City of Waukesha. Police say during the pursuit, the driver lost control of the vehicle on Pewaukee Road in the area of Buena Vista Avenue and struck a utility pole.

The driver was transported to Waukesha Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released to the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department.

The Patch reports Delamar told officials he was attempting to find a friend's house when he panicked. He said "his thoughts were blank, and he felt as if he wasn't in control of himself."

Authorities say the pursuit lasted 2.7 miles.

Delamar faces up to 1.5 years in prison and $10,000 in fines if convicted. He remains in jail in lieu of $1,500 bail.
