Wind ADVISORY for most of southeast Wisconsin from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday

Construction workers push through bitter cold temperatures

WAUWATOSA (WITI) — As the arctic blast descends on southeastern Wisconsin early this week, many are looking for ways to escape the cold. However, for those who work outside, dealing with the elements is just another part of the work day.

With temperatures in the single digits and sub-zero wind chills, work continued on Monday, January 21st in Wauwatosa, where construction crews are building the UW-Milwaukee Innovation campus. Crews pushed through the cold to keep the project on schedule.

Dan Joslin and his partner were lucky enough to spend most of the day behind the wheel of some heavy equipment. However, they are not strangers to working regardless of how low the mercury drops.

“10 years ago in December it was colder than heck! A lot colder than this. I was outside all day in it,” Joslin said.

Joslin’s tips to fight the freeze aren’t out of the ordinary, but he swears by them. Not only does he bundle up, but he keeps extra layers of clothing in his car.

Joslin says any time the feeling starts to go in his fingers, he takes a warming break. He says while some may believe constant work will keep you warm, there is a danger to that in the construction business.

“If you’re doing heavy-duty work, shortness of breath, you’ll end up breathing the cold air in,” Joslin said.

Despite the bitter cold, Joslin is not a bitter worker.

“The way the economy is, I’ll take work any day,” Joslin said.

Experts say those who have to venture out in the bitter cold should be aware that frostbite can set in on exposed skin within a matter of minutes.
