Will people heed Sheriff Clarke's call to firearms?

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- It may be a Milwaukee County issue, but the message from Sheriff David Clarke has reached Waukesha County and at Fletcher's Arms in Waukesha.

It's a place where you can not only buy a firearm, but take a concealed carry class and fire a gun all at one site.

"We get a lot of spill over because you realize that there's nothing in the city of Milwaukee," said Terry Haber, from Fletcher's. "We're averaging well over 200 people per day on the weekend, and it's been busier than I've ever seen it in the 31 years that I've been doing this."

New shooters like Debbie Stoiber say they are on the fence about taking a concealed carry class.

"It's kind of just an enjoyment thing, we kind of spend a little time doing something we both like," said Stoiber, referring to the fact she and her husband go to the shooting range on a weekly basis.

In a Public Service Announcement, Sheriff Clarke said, "consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself, until we get there, you have a duty to protect yourself and your family."

But even before this P.S.A., Fletcher's concealed carry classes were booked through March.

"There's a lot of people who we're not going to be able to help just because we don' t have the firearms in stock right now, " said Haber.

"I don't know if it's necessarily because of something David Clarke said, I do think people take to heart that kind of information," said Stoiber.

Stoiber feels people will continue to take the class for a variety of reasons, regardless of the Sheriff's P.S.A.

"It's something that makes me feel more secure, that's why I would probably do it in time, when I'm comfortable with my weapon, " added Stoiber.

What many gun stores in our area are seeing is a spike in women signing up for concealed carry classes.

The stores we spoke with do feel demand will rise even more after Clarke's P.S.A.

However, employees couldn't tell us how much more of a demand there will be, given that demand is already at an all time high.
