Milwaukee man charged in shooting death of Ronald Hudnell

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- 18-year-old Jerelle Smith of Milwaukee has been charged with second degree reckless homicide in the shooting death of 63-year-old Ronald Hudnell.

Hudnell was shot around 7:15 p.m. on January 29th near 13th and Atkinson.

The criminal complaint in the case says Hudnell's body was discovered in a residence -- appearing to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

The criminal complaint indicates police interviewed a witness who said he and Smith walked to Hudnell's residence together on the night of the shooting.

The witness reported Smith had a black revolver in his hand and was pointing it at Hudnell, and that the two were "messing around with each other."

Then, the criminal complaint says gunshots sounded, and Smith reportedly said: "Oh (expletive), I didn't mean it."

The criminal complaint says when arrested, Smith told police the witness "must have snitched on him." He also reportedly asked police "if someone was sorry, what would happen to him if he shot someone by accident -- and how much time that person would get in jail."

If convicted, Smith could face a maximum of 25 years in prison and/or $100,000 in fines.
