Officials, residents in Oak Creek watch SOTU, praise Lt. Murphy

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- On Tuesday evening, February 12th, city of Oak Creek officials and residents were keeping a close eye on President Barack Obama's State of the Union address -- backing Oak Creek Police Lieutenant Brian Murphy, who was on hand in Washington, D.C. for the speech.

In August, Brian Murphy was one of the first on the scene during the Sikh Temple shooting in Oak Creek. Murphy was shot multiple times and rushed to Froedtert Hospital by fellow first responders, like Oak Creek Battalion Chief Thomas Jonson.

"Very proud of the people who pitched in the day and fortunately Brian had a good outcome," Jonson said.

Murphy drew gunfire away from worshippers at the Sikh Temple that August day, and on Tuesday night, he drew national attention as a guest for President Obama's State of the Union address.

"It shines well on Oak Creek and he's a great representative," Jonson said.

The glow of pride beamed from the doors of Erv's Mug restaurant and bar. The eatery showed President Obama's speech and for a moment, Mardi Gras was muted and Oak Creek's self confidence swelled.

Oak Creek residents at Erv's on Tuesday night said it was a great honor to see Oak Creek and Lt. Brian Murphy recognized on a national stage.
