Milwaukee mother accused of throwing baby on sidewalk steps

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee mother is in jail accused of throwing her one-year-old baby on a sidewalk. Why? She apparently told police she didn't want the child anymore.

The 22-year-old mother has not been criminally charged yet -- so FOX6 News is not naming her.

Neighbors and police say the mother threw her one-year-old toddler onto some cement stairs near 24th and Michigan in Milwaukee on Tuesday, February 12th. They say the woman then flagged down a police squad, telling the officer "she no longer wanted the child."

Gejaun Bracey says the woman was coming to see him. He was not home at the time. The two share a child that was not involved in Tuesday's incident. Bracey says he spoke with the mother earlier in the day.

"When I talked to her, she sounded fine. The next time I talked to her, this was going on so," said Bracey.

The baby girl suffered non-life threatening injuries to her face. But she is being treated at a hospital.

A neighbor who spoke with FOX6 News says the mother struggled with mental health issues and has lost custody of at least one of her kids in the past.

Dr. Lynn Sheets is the medical director of Advocacy and Protective Services at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. She says if you suspect a parent is losing control, do not be afraid to step in.

"You can offer help, you can offer support, the parenting network, family resource centers," said Dr. Sheets.

Dr. Sheets says an entire community needs to step up to help prevent abuse.
