Seven MPD officers "plead the fifth" in Derek Williams inquest

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Wednesday, February 13th was day three in the inquest into the death of Derek Williams -- and all seven Milwaukee police officers on the scene the night Williams died chose not to testify.

Williams died while in police custody in July 2011.

Now, an inquest jury will issue an advisory verdict on whether anyone was at fault for his death, and it looks as though Milwaukee police officers won't help the jury make its decision.

None of the seven officers on the scene that July night would even answer the question of whether they are a Milwaukee police officer during the inquest hearing on Wednesday.

Also on the stand on Wednesday was Williams' mother. She told the jury what Williams' girlfriend said to her over the telephone the night her son was in police custody.

"He's gone. They won't give him no air," Williams' mother Sonya Moore said.

Williams' girlfriend also spoke with the jury. She recounted first hand what it was like as she ran to the scene.

"I heard him when I got out of the car. I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I think I heard that all the way on the corner," Williams' girlfriend Sharday Rose said.

Those with the Williams' family are now bringing up concerns and questions about this inquest -- telling FOX6 News they have several questions they'd like the special prosecutor to bring up.
