Medical Examiner: Child rescued from south side fire has died

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed a boy injured in a fire near 10th and Morgan on the city's south side on Saturday morning, February 16th died on Sunday.

Fire officials were called to the scene just before 8 a.m. Officials say the fire was on the second floor of the building -- and that a child was removed from a second floor bedroom.

"We encountered heavy, heavy heat on the second floor, thick black rolling smoke," Asst. Chief of Milwaukee Fire Operations Dan Lipski said.

First responders were able to resuscitate the boy, and he was taken to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin.

"I need all the citizens of Milwaukee to pray for my son, Miguel," his mom Eva Graf said.

Another man was in the home at the time. He got out safely. Family says it is the boy's grandfather.

The family is in disbelief, but remains optimisitc.

"We're in shock. We're praying for Miguel," his great-aunt Sylvia Oleszek said. "He's a strong little boy. He should be okay."

The Milwaukee Fire Department says it appears there were no smoke detectors inside the home.

"We have to stop these tragedies from happening in this city," said Dan Lipski, Assistant Chief of Operations for the Milwaukee Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Jack Christiansen says the law in Milwaukee requires a smoke detector on every floor of a home.

"They're sensitive.  They're that vital and that important.  It's just catching that fire at its earliest stage that can save lives," said Christiansen.

If you live in Milwaukee, the fire department will even come to your home, do a fire inspection and install alarms free of charge if you qualify.  The number is 414-286-8980.
