Two MPD officers fired during Fire & Police Commission meeting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Two Milwaukee police officers were fired, and a new commissioner was hired during Thursday, March 7th's Fire and Police Commission meeting.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn informed his bosses Thursday night of two high-profile firings.

Chief Flynn first informed the Fire and Police Commission about Officer Carl Howell. He was convicted of misconduct in office for stealing $200 while investigating a burglary at a food store. He cannot appeal his firing because he is now a convicted felon.

"The other instance is an officer who drove under the influence and had a car crash and sustained injuries himself and injured his friend at the same time," Chief Flynn said.

That is Eric De Vries. He was seen battered and bruised in a mug shot taken after the crash.

De Vries gave the Commission notice that he will appeal his firing.

In other business, Chief Flynn is also proposing a reorganization of his leadership to even out the workload.

"It'll bring us even closer to the community. Narrowing the span of control, the assistant chiefs will have a smaller number of important commands and that will bring them closer to the people for which they are ultimately responsible," Chief Flynn said.

Chief Flynn says the changes may seem subtle, but could, over the long haul, help streamline crime fighting.

The Commission also welcomed a new member, Ann Wilson. Her appointment by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was controversial with alderman initially blocking her place on the board -- wanting more input on the selection project.

"I am glad to be here to be able to serve the Milwaukee community," Wilson said.
