Search is on for owner of dog rescued from ice on Kinnickinnic River

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Do you recognize the face of the mixed-breed dog in this story? The operators at the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) hope you can help identify him -- and return him to his family.

"Very good shape. You know, beautiful coat. Pretty reasonably well-behaved other than being nervous and no evidence of any adverse affects of being on the ice," said Marcus Gordon, an emergency room veterinarian.

That's right. The dog was found stuck on a slab of ice on the Kinnickinnic River on Sunday evening, March 17th. Two members of the Milwaukee Police Harbor Patrol took out a boat to rescue to the dog. They were not a welcomed site for the canine. He almost seemed to want to jump in the water to avoid getting caught. But with a bit of coaxing, the barking stopped and the dog was rescued.

Vets say the dog had no tag or microchip but they don't think he's a stray.

"He's reasonably well socialized with humans. He'll listen to us. He is very quiet and compliant when we do treatments and examinations and definitely has evidence that he has a home and someone cares for him," said Gordon.

But where are the owners now? Hopefully, they're looking for their dog. He's at the MADACC office and will be there for at least seven days.

"That gives his owner an opportunity to either come down physically to our facility or to check on line. We have a website," said Jessica Huber, MADACC's outreach director.

The MADACC website is updated hourly. It has pictures of lost animals you can check out if you're looking for yours.
