Award-winning film, Packers great part of anti-bullying effort

GREENDALE (WITI) -- "Grave Digger" former Green Bay Packer Gilbert Brown was on hand at Greendale High School on Wednesday evening, March 20th -- the big, strong defensive player shared a story of how he was bullied.

The Greendale Against Bullying sign outside the Greendale High School sits in stark contrast to pictures of police patrolling the school following a bomb threat just before homecoming earlier this school year.

Nicholas Olson pleaded guilty in court for making the threat. His punishment was lenient after it came out that he was repeatedly bullied in school. He was even voted onto the homecoming court as a practical joke.

Fast forward a few months to Wednesday night, March 20th -- when Greendale students watched the award-winning movie "Bully."

It was part of an event put on by a community group called Greendale Against Bullying. The group was formed by Linda Lee and other community members in the wake of Olson's bomb threat.

We decided to take a different approach. Hopefully in years to come people think before they do something that hurts the other kids. We want to get them before they get a record with the school, before police are involved. We want to get them before this happens," Lee said.

If what happened at the school and the movement that followed was not enough to get the attention of students, Packers great Gilbert Brown was on hand. Brown shared stories about how he was bullied in middle school and high school.

"It's not make-believe. It's real and I'm here to show these kids that regardless of what they're going through we'll try to help you and help you succeed in life," Brown said.
