FIRST Robotics Competition draws attention in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's not exactly March Madness -- but it's pretty close. Milwaukee is hosting a FIRST Robotics Regional competition at the US Cellular Arena this weekend.

Teams like Sussex-Hamilton Charger Robotics are given six weeks to design and construct a robot to meet a specific challenge. This year's competition is a combination of throwing Frisbees and climbing pyramids.

John Abele is the former chairman of the FIRST board. He explains, the organization was founded nearly 25 years ago to inspire students and help launch the next generation of science and technology leaders.

"Rather than sort of create another way, another class, another curriculum, why not make it a sport," said Abele.

Robotics teams take part in two full days of qualifying rounds. If they survive, they move on to the national championships which are being held in St. Louis this year.
