Rally held at Serb Hall Sunday to support police officers

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A rally was held Sunday, March 24th in support of police officers.

Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan joined with leaders of the Milwaukee Police Association     to announce the rally that was planned for 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at American Serb Hall.

“More than 99.9% of the brave men and women serving as Milwaukee police officers are honest, hard working, diligent, and tough as nails. These fine officers put their lives on the line for us each and every day, and as a community we need to rally around them and let them know how much we support them," Alderman Donovan said.

Alderman Donovan called the rally "a thank you party" for police officers.

"The men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department do a great job for this community.  And the challenges they're up against, I don't think the 'average Joe' in Milwaukee begins to realize," Alderman Donovan said.

A speaker at the event defended the three MPD officers involved in the Derek Williams case, after an inquest jury recommended they be charged with "failure to render aid."

Williams died while in police custody. Officers tried to revive him, but couldn't.

Critics have said they didn't act soon enough, but at least one speaker Sunday said those officers did everything they could.
