District Attorney's Office: No charges in runaway girls case

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office says no charges will be filed after two young girls ran away from home this weekend -- despite the fact that a 27-year-old woman was arrested in the case.

The District Attorney's Office says there is insufficient evidence for any charges.

The girls, ages nine and four disappeared from their beds Saturday night, March 23rd. A massive search by police and volunteers went on through Sunday morning. Around noon, a citizen who found the girls took them to police District 5.

Milwaukee police say the girls were fine and left in their winter clothes, calling it a case of runaways. However, the young ages of the girls left many unanswered questions: how did they leave? Why did they leave? Was the older girl enrolled in school?

The girls are staying with a relative, presumably under the watch of Child Protective Services.
