Port Washington police searching for hit-and-run driver

PORT WASHINGTON (WITI) -- Port Washington police are asking the public for help locating a vehicle that struck a 15-year-old student Wednesday morning, March 27th in the crosswalk at Grand and Webster.

The incident occurred between 7:15 a.m. and 7:20 a.m.

Police say other vehicles were stopped on Grand Avenue waiting for the student to cross when a vehicle passed on the right going westbound -- striking the student in the left leg and running over her foot.

The only vehicle description is that it is a smaller silver or white car with some type of a blue and white round sticker on the back.

Chris Fullington is the girl's mother. She told FOX6 News she received a phone call Wednesday morning that all parents dread. Her boss told her than her daughter Nina had been in an accident.

"I panicked and ran up to the high school and the ambulance was already there and it was just. It was nerve wrecking to get a call like that," Fullington said.

Nina walks three blocks to school, and was just one block away from Port Washington High School when she was struck.

"My daughter said when she was hit, the car did stop for a second and then left.  So I'm assuming the driver must have sensed that they hit something," Fullington said.

As a bus driver in the school district, Fullington is familiar with the crosswalk on Grand Avenue near Webster.

"I mean, people drive fast.  I see it everyday.  Nobody slows down for anybody and kids are running so fast for their life just to get across the street," Fullington said.

Fullington wants the driver to come forward and other drivers to learn from her daughter's experience.

"It just angers me that the person would just drive away," Fullington said.
