Election officials make last-minute preparations ahead of Election Day

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Spring General Election is Tuesday, April 2nd -- and some officials say voter turnout in Milwaukee should be higher than other areas of the state, due to a question on the ballot in Milwaukee.

Poll workers made last-minute preparations on Monday ahead of Election Day. The polls open at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Milwaukee election officials say they expect a 10% to 15% higher voter turnout in the city than what is expected statewide.

"Lot of interest in the ballot. We've got state, county and local races on the ballot. We've also got a very important ballot referendum question in the city of Milwaukee," Milwaukee Election Commission Executive Director Neil Albrecht said.

That referendum is an advisory question (not binding) concerning same-day voter registration in the city. Critics say the process can be open to fraud, while supporters say same-day voter registration encourages higher voter turnout.

Milwaukee is a community in which voters take advantage of the opportunity to register to vote on Election Day.

"One in five voters during the last presidential election -- so the Common Council really wanted the opportunity for citizens to be able to express voices directly to the Legislature through the referendum question," Albrecht said.

Meanwhile, officials say voters shouldn't have to wait in long lines on Tuesday.

The polls close Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
