Suspect in custody after Capitol Police officer stabbed

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A uniformed state Capitol Police officer was stabbed outside of the Wisconsin Department of Revenue office at a building in downtown Milwaukee on Wednesday afternoon, April 10th.

Late on Wednesday evening, Milwaukee police announced a 25-year-old West Allis man was taken into custody in connection with this incident. Police have said they do not believe this was a random act of violence.

The stabbing took place around 1 p.m. at an office near 6th and Wells. Two officers responded to the building because of a duress alarm on the fourth floor. When the officers arrived, they were confronted by a man who stabbed one of the officers in the neck.

The injured officer, who is 66 years old and a 10-year veteran of the force, was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. No other state employees were hurt in this incident.

Damone Powell was in the building at the time. He says the building was put on lockdown.

"They said an officer has been stabbed and don't move, basically," Powell said.

The Milwaukee Police Department is leading the investigation into this stabbing. Capitol Police are assisting.

Dept. of Administration Sec. Mike Huebsch said in a statement, "We are also thinking about all of our officers who put themselves in harm’s way each day, and ask that you send your thoughts to everyone involved in this situation."
