Truck with large load strikes overpass on southbound I-43

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A semi tractor trailer hauling what appears to be a massive generator or piece of machinery struck the Keefe Ave. overpass on southbound I-43 on Thursday, April 25th.

The wreck happened around 2:30 p.m. There were no injuries.

Bridge inspectors were called to the scene to make sure the Keefe Ave. overpass was sound. They have since detected some damage which will need to be repaired. Because of that, two of the three southbound lanes on I-43 will be shut down temporarily.

The Keefe Ave. bridge remains passable.

A spokeswoman with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says the driver of the semi was cited for two violations: semi over height and operating without a state permit.

The semi operator did have his city permit for the load he was hauling, but that only applies to city streets, and not the freeway system.

MPD was providing an escort for the semi when it crashed into the overpass.

All lanes of traffic were reopened before 6:00 p.m.
