Milwaukee building deemed national historic landmark

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Soldiers Home was designated as a national historic landmark during a ceremony on April 26th.

A plaque was unveiled to mark the home on the VA campus. The home opened in 1867 to offer housing, rehabilitation and medical care for Civil War veterans.

“We continue to honor President Lincoln’s vision by being good stewards of our history, while making sure we provide world-class health care to our veterans. Nothing is more important to us than our sacred bond to take care of veterans. We do this every day, whether it is in primary care, mental health, our older veterans in the Community Living Center, or routine appointments. We are grateful for the trust given us by veterans, and we continue to work to earn that trust every day," said Zablocki VA Medical Center director Robert Beller.

National Historic Landmark status is the nation’s highest historical status. The Soldiers Home is one of only 41 National Historic Landmarks in Wisconsin.
