Milw. Public Schools to celebrate Nation Bike to School Day

MILWAUKEE (WITI) --Fernwood Montessori, Clement Ave School, Maryland Ave Montessori, and Fairview Charter in Milwaukee will join 1,500 schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on May 8th 2013.

Approximately 200 students at each school will be riding or walking to school Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders. Rep. Chrtistine Sinicki will be walking with students at Fernwood. Principal Swick will be walking with Clement Ave students, Mc Gruff will be at Fairview to welcome kids, and Roscoe, the Admirals mascot will be at Maryland Ave to cheer on families.

The event will begin at 7am with kids, parents and community leaders riding from locations near the school.  Bicyclists and walkers will arrive at the school at 7:20am. Other special activities associated with the event include free coffee for parents, healthy snacks for kids, stickers and small tokens for students.

Bike to School Day encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for students in the month of May and builds on the popularity and success of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October.

Bike to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The event is being organized by the Wisconsin Bike Fed WisconsinBikeFed.org
