Mother killed in fire near 21st & Atkinson

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Officials say a mother was killed after a fire broke out inside an apartment complex near 21st and Atkinson.

Fire officials took the call just before 3:00 p.m. Monday, May 13th. Fire officials say they had the fire put out within four minutes of arriving at the scene.

Officials believe the fire broke out on the third floor of the Atkinson Apartments building.

Trina Wainwright is a cousin of the victim's husband. She says her cousin got home and had no idea his apartment had caught fire.

"He came home with the children from work and school and the fire trucks were here and they told him he couldn't go in the house and he said 'but my wife is there,'" Wainwright said.

Wainwright says the woman's husband was notified by neighbors that she was taken out of the building.

"I mean, what can you say? Time is short. You don't know when your day is up, so you better live it wisely while you can," Wainwright said.

Officials say there were working smoke detectors in the building. American Red Cross officials were on the scene to assist displaced residents.
