WEST ALLIS (WITI) — West Allis police have taken a 48-year-old man into custody after a 63-year-old woman was found dead in an apartment building hallway on Friday, May 17th.
The woman was a resident of the building near 75th and Washington St. where she was found deceased. A man who lives in the building told FOX6 News that it is a transitional home.
Tom Entringer lives in the building, and told FOX6 News on Sunday he is feeling relief, knowing that police have taken a possible suspect into custody.
“I’m glad it’s all over basically. Still shaky but it is a relief that someone is in custody,” Entringer said.
Both the individual taken into custody and the victim lived in the building described as a transitional home for people with disabilities.
Entringer described the person taken into custody as a recluse, and the victim as quiet, but a good person.
On Sunday, crews worked at the building as neighbors passing by expressed their concerns.
“It’s a shame that it happened. No one deserves that,” neighbor Brady Mullikin said.
The Medical Examiner’s Office is still trying to figure out an exact cause and manner of the woman’s death — as police look for a motive.
Meanwhile, neighbors say it is an unfortunate situation all around.
“It`s a shame people try to take a couple steps forward and it`s unfortunate when they take a couple of steps back like that so we hope the best for everyone involved and see someone come to justice for what happened,” Mullikin said.
The man taken into custody is being held at the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility.
The District Attorney’s Office is expected to review this case this week regarding possible charges. FOX6 News is not yet naming this man, as he has yet to be charged.
This isn’t the first time the police have investigated a death at this intersection. A man was fatally stabbed in or near the same apartments back in 2008.
