Moore tornado survivors trying to pick up the pieces

MOORE, Oklahoma (WITI) — On Monday afternoon, May 20th, those in Moore, Oklahoma had warning that a tornado was coming — but because of the sheer power of the tornado that has now been declared an EF-5, for so many, the warning didn’t matter.

“I don’t know if you have many thoughts during all of it. You just go,” Kristi Lewis told FOX6′s Ben Handelman in Moore one day after the devastating tornado struck.

For Lewis, Tuesday was a day of worrying and picking up. Her Moore, Oklahoma barbershop lays in ruins.

“I saw the shop, and I just started crying,” Lewis said.

Lewis was not inside the barbershop when the tornado struck, because luckily, she is closed on Mondays.

Now, there is no roof and walls are missing — and she was not the only one trying to pick up the pieces on Tuesday. She got a surprise as FOX6′s cameras were rolling. Carlos Cabrera, a loyal customer, stopped by to let her know he is okay.

“It’s pretty amazing.  It looks like a war zone,” Cabrera said.

Cabrera was watching the news at home on Monday afternoon, when he realized he was in the twister’s bullseye. He then made a run for it with his car.

Cabrera told FOX6′s Ben Handelman he thought about stopping at the Moore Medical Center, but said he saw the twister and kept going.

The hospital lays in ruins after the tornado struck.

It’s unbelievable.  I mean, this was a pretty hospital,” Cabrera said.

Amazingly, everyone inside the hospital when the tornado struck survived.

“I hope we can just find people that are still alive.  I don’t know, this is pretty nasty.  I don’t think it’s looking very good though,” Cabrera said.

Many in Moore were without power and water on Tuesday — and it will be a long road to recovery.
