Former Women's Club of Racine catches fire

RACINE (WITI) -- The Racine Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the former Women's Club of Racine Saturday morning, May 25th.

The fire was located in the stage area of the main floor and caused heavy smoke.

The building, built in 1929, sustained extensive smoke damage to the interior, but officials say it could have been much worse.

Fire crews remained on the scene well after the fire was out, in order to ventilate the large amount of square footage that was filled with smoke.

The structure was not actively being used at the time as improvements were being made.

Officials estimate the damage to be around $60,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
