Navy football players investigated in sex assault complaint

(CNN) -- Three football players at the U.S. Naval Academy are under investigation for an alleged sex assault incident involving a female midshipmen almost a year ago, according to a Defense Department official.

The official said the three athletes were accused at the time of the alleged incident, but the woman dropped the complaint a few months later. She revived it earlier this year and the investigation was launched.

The players were not identified. However, one was to have graduated last week. He was told to remain at the academy pending the outcome of the case.
