Students walk to school to raise money for tornado victims

BROOKFIELD (WITI) -- A large group of Brookfield Central High students walked to school in matching yellow shirts on Tuesday, May 4th, as part of a fundraiser for victims of the tornadoes that recently struck Texas and Oklahoma.

Brookfield Central High's Key Club, a service organization for students interested in volunteer opportunities, organized the walk.

"The kids decided they wanted to do something in response to the tornadoes in Oklahoma and Texas," said Ronn Blaha, the Key Club's adviser. "So we did a little brainstorming and decided that we would organize this walk to school."

Blaha said the students hoped to raise over $2,500 from walking Tuesday. Each student pledged a minimum of $10 and received a t-shirt for their participation. All revenues from the walk will be donated to the American Red Cross and United Way.

Nicole Johnson, a student at the high school and member of the school's key club, said she was pleased with the amount of students who walked.

"We expected not that many at first because it was really short notice," Johnson said. "But luckily we had a huge turnout. I think we have about 50 kids coming so that will be good."
