Gov. Walker discusses UW System tuition freeze at UWGB

GREEN BAY (WITI) -- Governor Scott Walker met with UW-Green Bay students on Tuesday, June 4th to discuss the historic two-year tuition freeze added to the proposed 2013-2015 Biennial Budget. This two-year freeze will be a first for the UW System since its inception in 1971.

"It`s great to be here at UW-Green Bay to hear from these students about college tuition costs. Tuition at four-year institutions in the UW System has increased by at least 5.5 percent every year since 2001, far surpassing the rate of inflation. In this budget, we included a two-year tuition freeze to lighten the load for students and their families. They deserve a break," Gov. Walker said.

Two UW-Green Bay students, Burgandy Brockman and Anastasia McCain, and UW-Green Bay Chancellor Thomas Harden joined Gov. Walker at Mary Ann Cofrin Hall on UW-Green Bay`s campus.

"I think it`s great that Governor Walker is taking time to meet with students and to hear our concerns about the cost of tuition. After seeing my tuition costs go up year after year, this freeze is a much-needed break and it definitely helps me out," Burgandy Brockman, who will be a senior year next year at UW-Green Bay said.

'I`m excited about this tuition freeze. This two-year freeze means we`re spending and borrowing less money, and that`s great news for every student in the UW System," Anastasia McCain, who will enter her sophomore year at UW-Green Bay in the fall said.

Gov. Walker plans to visit more students across other UW System campuses in the near future.
