Man pulled from Milwaukee River is in critical condition

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Fire officials responded to a call of three people in the water near Wisconsin Avenue on Sunday afternoon, June 16th.

It happened just before 3:00 p.m.

Officials say two people were able to get out of the water safely -- and a third person was pulled from the water.

Officials say the individual did not have a pulse and was not breathing. Officials performed CPR and the individual was taken to the hospital.

Officials say as he was being taken to the hospital, the man was able to regain a pulse.

The man was listed in critical condition on Sunday evening.

A Battalion Chief at the scene told FOX6 News he believes the man who needed to be rescued went into the water first. It is unclear whether he jumped or fell.

The Battalion Chief says two others who were with the man went into the water after him and were unable to rescue him, but were able to get themselves out of the water.

Kimberly Gartrell was eating brunch along the river at John Hawk's Pub on Sunday afternoon. She didn't hear the men go into the water, but she noticed the commotion that followed.

"One of the divers from the Coast Guard was using a pole to search the water. He did that for less than a minute and it appeared he did find something. Another diver went in and pulled someone out of the water. It was pretty intense to see. We were sitting across the river so we weren't very close, but we were close enough to see everything that was going on, including the victim, and it was pretty sad," Gartrell said.
