Nearby business reacts to Shorewood tactical situation

SHOREWOOD (WITI) -- Residents of a Shorewood apartment complex weren't the only ones affected during a tactical situation on Friday afternoon, June 21st. Businesses in the area were also impaired.

Staff of the men's clothing store, Harleys, watched as officers in riot gear ran past their retail shop and snipers waited outside.

"We looked out the window and saw an armored personnel carrier with a SWAT team from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office going in with all their full gear and shields and battering rams," recalls owner Tim Ryan.

Shorewood police say they were alerted of a possible domestic violence situation around 2:30 p.m. When they arrived at the apartment, the residents wouldn't answer the door or their phones.

Out of fear for the safety of those inside, police called for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's SWAT Team to assist with entry into the unit. Neighbors say there have been problems there before.

"It's not the first time it's been going on here. The police were called like three weeks ago," said Thomas Norkus.

One of the residents eventually contacted police before coming outside and ending the situation peacefully.

Business at Harleys, however, took a hit.

"I think it certainly affects our business. Retail is consistently inconsistent but those are the hours people like to drop by, after work," said employee Jeff Brand.

The staff says they are thankful no one was hurt and that they were able to open the following day.

"There is a relief that there was nothing serious that came out of it," said Ryan.

Shorewood police say a woman was released from custody while a man is still being held. He is expected to be formally charged on Tuesday, June 25th.
