Police follow up on leads after bicyclist struck in hit-and-run

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police say a man struck by a vehicle while on his bicycle near 76th and Villard on Tuesday night, June 25th is now in stable condition.

Police say they are following up on multiple leads, after the hit-and-run. Among them, they are looking for a dark Chevy Impala.

Officials say the victim, a 47-year-old man, was riding a bicycle eastbound in the westbound lanes of W. Villard when he was struck by a vehicle that had just made a right turn onto Villard from 76th Street.

The man was taken to Froedtert Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Tuesday night.

People who live and work in the area said they were not surprised to hear about this accident. They say that intersection can be dangerous.

Chris Gaspardo works right across the street where the accident happened. However the business, Hart Auto, was closed up for the night when it occurred. "I was surprised we didn’t see it, that it didn’t happen in front of us, because many of them do," explained Gaspardo.

Gaspardo has already seen many accidents in her 2 years of working at Hart Auto, and unfortunately she said she doesn’t think she has seen her last.

"They use it as a highway. They fly down Villard very fast, and sometimes don’t pay attention," Gaspardo said of the cars that drive by her window.

Seeing all those accidents have made Gaspardo, and many other neighbors more cautious. Gaspardo just hopes other drivers passing through now take note.

"You need to slow down and pay attention," advised Gaspardo.
