Allen sentenced to five years in prison for drunk driving incident
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee County judge sentenced 25-year-old Christopher Allen to five years in prison on Thursday, July 25th. This, after Allen reached a plea deal on charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle.
During the hearing, Allen directly addressed Aaron Calvin’s family, despite warnings from his attorney. He said it was the first time he was able to directly talk to them since the car crash that killed Aaron in February. Allen was driving the car.
“I love you. I really do. I love the family. You all are constantly in my prayers,” said Allen, “It’s painful for me. It’s painful to everybody.”
Police say Allen was driving drunk the night of February 3rd. According to police, he was driving nearly 97 miles an hour when his car hit a tree near Sherman and Florist on Milwaukee's north side. Allen was driving two friends home. Karen Calvin`s twin brother Aaron was one of them. He was killed in the crash.
“He was a good man, and his life didn't have to end like this,” said Karen Calvin in court.
The other person in the car that night was Keyon White, who because of his injuries can no longer pursue his goal of becoming a firefighter. During the sentencing, White described his injuries to the court. “During the accident I suffered a fractured neck, broken ribs, broken hip that required surgery to fix,” he said.
Judge Wagner addressed the fact that there was a lot to weigh in the case; including the fact Allen didn’t have a prior record, besides one speeding ticket as a teenager. He also addressed Allen’s positive role in the community before the accident. But he said despite all the good things, this was a very bad thing he did. Judge Wagner sentenced Allen to five years in prison.
“I'd definitely rather have my brother. And I just feel this didn't have to happen. It`s always a choice if you drink and drive. And he didn't have to do that. And that`s what he did,” said Karen Calvin.
