One driver arrested for DUI after crash, another after driving wrong way

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- At the start of this year, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke ordered an aggressive weekend Driving Under the Influence (DUI) initiative to rid the Milwaukee County freeway system of drunken drivers.

This weekend’s initiative from Friday, July 26th at 4:00 p.m. through Sunday, July 28th at 6:00 a.m. resulted in the arrest of seven drunken drivers.  The average PAC of these offenders was .13.

On Sunday, at 3:48 a.m., a 911 caller indicated he had been in a crash and was in a ditch off US-45 northbound and Burleigh Street and needed medical help.  Deputies located the vehicle at 3:52 a.m. in the parking lot at 11300 W. Burleigh Street.  Two subjects were on the ground outside a severely damaged vehicle.  The Wauwatosa Fire Department also responded to the scene.

Rodney Morgan

Rodney L. Morgan, age 47, of Milwaukee, and his 42-year-old male passenger, were both transported to Froedtert Hospital.

Morgan had injuries to his eye socket and rib fractures.  His passenger had lacerations.

An investigation revealed that the vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to rest in the lot.

Morgan has three prior DUI convictions: July 1996, August 2005 and April 2008.

Morgan, who has an extensive criminal history, was charged with domestic violence last year, but in August 2012, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct and his sentence was stayed.  He was ordered to maintain absolute sobriety and informed that any violations could result in new charges.

Morgan faces charges of misdemeanor DUI-4th Offense and DUI-Causing Injury in the freeway crash, with up to seven years in prison, if convicted.

On Sunday morning at 12:23 a.m., an off-duty Sheriff’s deputy sergeant witnessed a vehicle enter the southbound off-ramp from I-94 eastbound to Drexel Avenue the wrong way, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the ramp.

The vehicle nearly struck his car and several other vehicles, before making a U-turn and exiting the off-ramp.

The sergeant continued to follow the vehicle and update dispatch on their location.  Deputies stopped the vehicle in the 2000 block of W. College Avenue.
