SWAT Team called to Germantown following welfare check

GERMANTOWN (WITI) -- Law enforcement officials in Germantown on Sunday closed down a portion of a neighborhood off of Hilltop and Appleton for hours, and the SWAT Team was called in as officials were attempting to perform a welfare check.

Police say they received a "check welfare call" and arrived at the scene around 2:30 Sunday afternoon.

When officials arrived at the scene, a gunshot echoed through the area. Officers called for backup, concerned the gunfire inside could make its way outside.

"It's kind of scary because you think you know who you live by, and nothing goes wrong in your neighborhood," a neighbor told FOX6 News.

Officers eventually discovered a 50-year-old man had taken his own life inside a home in the area.

Dozens of law enforcement personnel responded to the area from Washington County, Germantown and Waukesha County.
