Wisconsin State Fair "Sporkies" food competition names winner

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- The "Sporkies," the Wisconsin State Fair's First Annual Food Competition, concluded on Tuesday, July 30th, with winners in three categories: "Best Tasting," "Most Creative," and "Grand Champion."

This year, the Mela Fritta Gelato on-a-stick (made by La Coppa) took home the "Most Creative" and "Grand Champion" awards.

A panel of celebrity judges tasted and graded eight finalist food dishes. Among the celebrity judges was Green Bay Packers Hall-of-Famer, Gilbert Brown. He explained why he gave the gelato dish the perfect score.

"The taste man, the taste," Brown said. "It's just like eating a regular caramel apple - it's awesome."

The other seven finalists include: Cajun Mac-n-Cheese (from Tropics at the Fair), Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Bacon Nuggets with Berry Weiss Jelly (from Saz's), Iced Irish Coffee Float (from Slim McGinn's West), Island Slaw (From Island Noodles), Mac Attack (from West Allis Shrine Club), Rasta Shrimp Sliders (from Tropics at the Fair) and a Thanksgiving Waffle.

All of these foods are available during the eleven days of the Wisconsin State Fair, which begins on Thursday, August 1st and ends on Sunday, August 11th.
