Private parking lots available for possible State Fair overflow

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- With thousands of people attending this year's State Fair, finding a place to park may be difficult.

According to Kathleen O'Leary, Marketing and Communications Director for the Wisconsin State Fair Park, there are over 7,000 parking spots to choose from. However, these spaces have been filling up fast.

"We have had an amazing run!" O'Leary said about this year's event.

On Friday, August 9th, the north parking lot was full by 11:30 a.m. And with all the wonderful weather expected this weekend, there are alternatives for those driving to the State Fair.

"All on the perimeter of the 200 acres of the Wisconsin State Fair are a number of homes, residents, individuals, companies that are willing to open up their gates, and open up their homes, and let people park," said O'Leary. "There`s been a number of children that have gone to college because of the parking that happens on this annual basis."

That's right - in case you don't snag a parking spot this weekend, you do have the chance to park in a lot operated by private homeowners. You have to pay of course - but many feel that the parking profits involve more than just money.

"It's the people, I think so," said Helen Makkos. "You meet so many different people from all over. Illinois, Nebraska, Texas, and just so many different people, it's great."
