Funeral arrangements set for 18-year-old shooting victim

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Funeral arrangements have been set for 18-year-old Xavier Melgoza, who lost his life after a shooting incident Tuesday, August 6th near 9th Pl. and Hayes. Melgoza died one day after the shooting.

Police say Melgoza was a witness to a theft at Salas Grocery, where he used to work, on Tuesday, August 6th. Surveillance cameras show two male suspects entering the store and stealing two 24-packs of beer.

When the suspects fled the area in a vehicle, Melgoza followed them in his car. One of the men allegedly fired shots at Melgoza, who was hit, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree.

Family friends say Melgoza slipped into a coma before eventually passing away from his injuries on Wednesday, August 7th.

Melgoza's family members tell FOX6 News a visitation is scheduled for Monday, August 12th at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (613 S. 4th St., Milw) from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Burial is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13th. A Mass will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (613 S. 4th St., Milw.). After mass, there will be a procession to the cemetery.

Additionally, a festival is planned in Melgoza's memory near 9th and Hayes on August 18th, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
