Milwaukee police sergeant formally charged with stalking

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- MPD sergeant Alex Lopez , the man who was arrested Wednesday, August 7th following an internal investigation, has been charged with one count of stalking. The charge stems from a complaint made by a woman with whom Sgt. Lopez had a past relationship, according to police.

According to criminal complaint, Lopez began texting and calling his ex-girlfriend continuously after she tried to end the relationship. According to the complaint, the two began dating in January of 2013, however, the woman broke things off after Lopez became sexually violent and controlling in the end of May, early June.

Following the breakup, the complaint indicates that Lopez repeatedly attempted to contact the woman through calls and text messages, he even called her workplace several times. The complaint states that Lopez would also show up at her residence and pound on the door, ring the doorbell, look in the windows and pace up and down the sidewalk.

According to the criminal complaint, Lopez sent  44 messages that read “call me please” and one message that said “why won’t u call me!!” between 9:53 p.m. and 2:47 a.m. on June 18th and June 19th. After that, Lopez allegedly sent 367 text messages between June 19th (excluding the messages referenced above) and August 5th. According to the complaint, the messages became threatening.

Lopez has been a member of the force for 16 years, and is assigned to District 2.

If convicted, Lopez could face up to $10,000 in fines and up to three years and six months in prison.
