Medical Examiner's Office investigating death of two-month-old

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the death of a two-month-old infant that was found unresponsive on an adult bed inside a two-bedroom apartment on Saturday, August 24th. The Medical Examiner says there are conflicting stories as to whether there was bed-sharing going on in this incident.

The Medical Examiner's report says the mother's initial statement was that the baby girl had been found on her side in her crib, but the child's mother later said she had been sleeping with the infant on an adult bed for a short time, before moving to another child's room for the night.

The report says the mother had woken up to feed another child and at that time, the mother checked the infant and found blood coming from her mouth.

At this time, the child's mother began CPR and called 911.

The Medical Examiner's report says the infant's mother told officials she has a Pack 'n Play for the infant, but it had been left at her mother's home.

The child's mother told officials it was common practice for the baby to sleep on her bed, or sometimes in a bouncy chair, and the child's mother told officials she had slept with the infant in the past, according to the Medical Examiner's report.

The child's mother told officials she slept with the infant for a short time, and then spent the rest of the night in her other daughter's room.

The Medical Examiner's report indicated the child's mother is on probation for two past OWIs and had lost her job and marriage due to alcohol.

The Medical Examiner's report indicates there were several items on the bed where the infant had been sleeping, including three large adult pillows, two blankets, a wash basket filled with clothes, and boxes, towels and other clothing.
