Bar owner who shot, killed armed robber receives award

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Andy Kochanski, the bar owner who shot and killed an armed robber in August, was recognized by Alderman Bob Donovan and members of the community on Saturday, September 14th.

During a ceremony outside McKiernan's Pub at 37th and Becher St., Kochanski was presented with a Golden Gloves Award. Five other individuals received the honor, as well.

"It makes my heart feel good that the people of the community care that much about him. He's a hard worker and I know it wasn't easy for him to do," said Kochanski's mother, Mary Kochanski. "It couldn't have been easy. It's not natural to kill someone. It's just not something you do."

It was the steps Kochanski took after shooting the robber that have the community looking at him as a hero. Kochanski gave the man CPR, attempting to save his life.

"That's just my training. That's who I am. I'm a firefighter. Even though I don't have my badge any more, I'm always going to be a firefighter," said Kochanski. "I don't feel like a hero. The real heroes, in my eyes, are the men and women in the military fighting for our country.

"I think we need to recognize that kind of courage and guts when we have it displayed, certainly to the caliber that he did," said Alderman Donovan.

The recognition ceremony was held during a block party which served as a fundraiser for police and firefighters in Donovan's district.
