Investigation continues into man spotted taking pictures of children outside schools

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- The investigation continues into a man spotted taking pictures of children outside two West Allis schools. Officials say the man showed particular interest in a nine-year-old girl -- and FOX6 News spoke to that girl's mother on Tuesday, October 1st.

On September 13th, staff at Madison Elementary School and Lincoln Intermediate School called police to report a suspicious man.

According to a warrant filed last week, police searched the man's home, removing CDs, DVDs and memory cards.

Officials say they are not revealing what was on the discs, but say they determined early on the man was not a threat to children.

"We were able to identify the individual involved rather quickly. The individual, since we`ve been talking to him, has been cooperative and we`re just looking into what exactly he was doing," Bob Fletcher said.

Police were able to recognize the suspect quickly because staff at Franklin Elementary School recognized the suspect's description.

A search warrant says the man had been seen in the hallways at Franklin, and had asked about becoming a tutor.

Police also discovered the man was contacting a nine-year-old girl at Franklin, despite her mother's requests for him to stop.

FOX6 News spoke with that girl's mother on Tuesday, October 1st. She says the man is a neighbor she used to let spend time with her daughter, until he went to Franklin asking for her records.

"He claims that she needed the attention. Then he tried saying he liked her as his own daughter. He is pretty persistent. When I told him no about the school information the next morning he was like 'you should authorize the school to give me that information.'  I was like 'no, I`m not,'" the girl's mother told FOX6 News.

The girl's mother says the man was angry when she told him he could not spend time with her daughter anymore. The girl has been told to run if she sees the man.

The man has not been charged with a crime.
