Trip to Washington, D.C. cancelled for Racine County students

WATERFORD (WITI) -- Every year, the eighth graders at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Racine County join peers from two other area schools and visit the nation's capital. Their mission is to see the lessons they're learning come to life.

But the plans for the trip are now cancelled because of the federal government shutdown.

This is the second time these students haven't seen the government at its best. Back in 2010, many of these same students had their visit to the Wisconsin state capitol cancelled due to protests in Madison.

According to the adults at St. Thomas Aquinas, the students are handling their disappointment rather well -- all things considered.

There is still some hope for the students. The trip may be rescheduled for early November. But that too, depends on what happens with the federal government.
