Brad Schimel announces plans to run for Attorney General

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- It will be months before Wisconsin voters pick the next attorney general, but Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel is already lining up for the race. Schimel formally declared his candidacy on Monday, October 14th while surrounded by family members and some of the area's top law enforcers.

Following an outreach effort by the current A.G. to spread the word about the dangers of heroin, Schimel said he'd put the effort on steroids.

"We're going to get out in front of the medical community because there needs to be a prevention aspect to this too," he said. "There are much better ways to treat chronic pain than simply prescribing opiate medications."

Schimel's campaign said he has already received support from 17 other district attorneys in the state. When asked if the outgoing incumbent, J.B. Van Hollen, intended to support Schimel's run, Schimel said he'd leave it to Van Hollen to announce whom he planned to support.
